Stuck for inspiration? Check out our list of the 5 most iconic road trips in the USA…

Great American Road Trips

1.  Route 66, Chicago to Los Angeles

“Get your kicks on Route 66,” sang Nat King Cole, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and a whole host of crooners and rockstars.

The Mother Road, as it’s also known, was one of the first US highways in existence, running from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California.

Route 66 passed through several states, including Missouri, Texas and Arizona, California and New Mexico, before its removal from the US Highway System.

The route itself covered a total of 2,448 miles and remains one of the most famous roads in history. Fortunately, it’s still possible to get your kicks on 66!

While the road may not officially exist anymore, sections of it still remain as part of the National Scenic Byway/‘Historic Route 66’.

Top tip: Driving Route 66? It’s worth mapping out a start and end point with motels, hotels and pit stops along the way as there’s a lot of road to cover!

2. Los Angeles to Las Vegas via Route 15

Looking for a USA road trip with a difference? We strongly recommend making the 300-mile drive along Route 15 from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

From the bright lights of Hollywood to the City of Sin, this incredible four-hour trek takes in motorway, desert and the incredible Mojave National Preserve.

The drive was also depicted in Terry Gilliam’s movie adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

One of the best things about the LA to Vegas drive is that you can split your holiday to America between two of the country’s most famous cities!

Top tip: Four hours might seem manageable but it’s worth remembering you’ll be driving in hot desert temperatures. Keep hydrated and make regular pit stops.

3. Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia

The USA’s best drives aren’t just found on the West Coast. Head east to the picturesque state of Virginia to experience the majestic Blue Ridge Parkway route – a whole 469 miles of scenic winding road.

The course passes through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties and it’s the sublime countryside that make the journey so worth it.

If you get the chance, make a stop at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The centre hosts a range of interesting attractions and exhibitions and gives a detailed account of the Parkway’s extensive history.

Top tip: To experience the full majesty of a Blue Ridge Parkway road trip, we recommend visiting during the autumn months.

4. Florida to Key West

As its name suggests, this dazzling 113-mile stretch of road takes you over the Atlantic Ocean and across the Florida Key Islands.

The trip takes in spectacular tropical views, national parks and some of the world’s most paradisiacal beaches. A road trip across the Keys is a must for all travellers planning a holiday to Florida. Hire a convertible, sit back and let the wind blow through your hair.

Top tip: It’s worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast before embarking on your road trip, as hurricanes in Florida are common during certain times of the year.

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

We’re big fans of California holidays and trips to LA, not least because the star-studded state is home to some of the USA’s most alluring drives.

Our fifth entry takes in the enviable West Coast and such landmarks as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and Malibu Beach.

California dreamin’ is the order of the day on a road trip down the USA’s sublime beauty spot – it’s no wonder the rich and famous have chosen to live here!

The Pacific Coast highway, or California State Route 1 as its officially known, is a must if you’re planning a visit to The Golden State.
